About Kayaking

Kayaking and canoeing have been around since the birth of human culture. The term kayak literally means hunter's boat.  The kayak was helpful for transportation, however it was an unbelievable hunting tool, facilitating a quiet method to hunt the quarry. The deck of the kayak caused it to be more sea worthy and better in rough seas than the canoe. Kayaks are typically used during the summer season, predominantly for fishing and hunting.

Just like the kayak, the umiak is a more impressive boat which could transport as much as 20 individuals. The kayak and the umiak existed alongside each other, both historically being extremely effective for water activities such as hunting and transportation.

Kayak design varied predicated on the unique urgencies of inhabitants of unique regions. For example, early kayaks created by inhabitants around the Bering Straight were shorter and wider. Whereas the kayaks from Greenland were low and glossy. Kayaks from Baffin Island were longer and wider.

The kayak was initially produced by the Inuit, an artic tribe. Interestingly, despite being the birthplace of the kayak, hardly any archaeological signs of the kayak is found in the Siberian Coast.

Kayak frames were created by early Eskimos using driftwood, and early kayaks were wrapped in sealskins.

Interesting, most early kayaks were fabricated using wood for the framework and tied together using sinew, or tendons, with a seal skin cover. Kayaks were essentially unsinkable since they contained air filled seal bladders. Nowadays, not many conventional skin kayaks are used and the knowledge of their construction is rapidly fading. Other early kayaks were created from whalebone or driftwood.

The material which are used to create a kayak have changed dramatically with the years. Europeans discovered the utility of the kayak, and kayaks once made with sealskins by artic tribed were changed by Europeans to employ cloth covers. This process continued until the 1950's when a small business called Valley Products and Services began making the first fiberglass kayak. Then in 1984, the initial plastic kayak was introduced. Kayaks continue steadily to become sturdier, lighter, and much more versatile.

There are plenty of kayaks fashioned with many different materials appropriate for many different marine activities. Today, kayaking is accessible to all irregardless of skill levels, supplying a quiet and gasoline - free marine activitiy for everyone.
